How We Evaluate Satoshi Nakamoto Identity Claims
A mystery attracts confident stories. This framework is designed to make those stories testable by ranking evidence according to independence, authenticity, specificity, and resistance to alternative explanations.
Evidence note: the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains unproven. This site distinguishes documented facts from interpretation and speculation.
The evidence hierarchy
- Tier 1 — Cryptographic evidence: a verifiable signature using a key with a strong, independently documented connection to Satoshi. Key provenance and message context matter; possession of any old bitcoin key is not automatically proof.
- Tier 2 — Authenticated contemporary records: dated emails, code repositories, domain records, contracts, or private communications independently authenticated and created before a candidate became publicly associated with Satoshi.
- Tier 3 — Direct technical and social proximity: demonstrated access to the relevant communities, tools, research, and collaborators during Bitcoin’s development.
- Tier 4 — Comparative analysis: stylometry, chronology, coding habits, and economic ideas. Useful when methods are disclosed and negative controls are included.
- Tier 5 — Narrative resemblance: personality, wealth, motive, secrecy, and biographical coincidence. These can generate hypotheses but carry little identifying power alone.
Five questions every claim must answer
1. Is the evidence authentic?
Can independent experts inspect the original artifact, its provenance, and the method used to date it? Screenshots, recollections, and copied text are weaker than preserved originals.
2. Is it specific?
Evidence has more value when few people could satisfy it. “Understood economics” is broad; authenticated access to a particular unpublished draft at a particular date would be narrow.
3. Is it independent?
Ten articles repeating the same original allegation are one source, not ten. We trace claims back to the earliest available record.
4. Was the hypothesis selected in advance?
Methods should be defined before searching for matches. Selecting a candidate first and then collecting similarities creates confirmation bias.
5. What would falsify the claim?
A theory that explains every outcome—including denials, silence, contradictions, and missing evidence—cannot be meaningfully tested.
How we treat stylometry
Writing-style comparison can be informative, but short texts, topic differences, edited material, and a preselected candidate pool can produce misleading matches. A rigorous analysis should disclose the corpus, remove duplicated quotations, separate formal from informal writing, test multiple authors, and report uncertainty.
British spelling is not a unique identifier. A writer can adopt a house style, live outside Britain, or intentionally obscure their origin. Posting-time analysis has similar limitations: time zones, work schedules, travel, delayed posting, and multiple authors can all change the pattern.
How we treat blockchain estimates
Early-miner attribution is probabilistic. Address clustering and mining-pattern studies can suggest that one entity mined many early blocks, but pseudonymous addresses do not carry identity labels. We therefore describe Satoshi’s holdings as estimates and identify the attribution method whenever a precise figure is used.
The fact that attributed coins remain unmoved can fit several explanations: deliberate restraint, lost keys, death, incorrect attribution, or a group with shared custody. Wealth is only one possible explanation and should not be presented as a unique match.
Corrections and disclosure policy
The book advances a specific hypothesis, creating a known risk of confirmation bias. The website addresses that risk by publishing counter-evidence, linking primary sources, labeling inference, and stating Musk’s denial. Commercial links to the book are visibly separate from evidentiary claims.
Substantive corrections should identify the page, sentence, and supporting source. Contact @xatoshimason. Material factual corrections will be incorporated into the relevant page and reflected in its modification date.
